FASHION POST #1: Spring 2009 Couture

After being pleased with the spring 2009 ready-to-wear collections, I had extremely high expectations for the couture lines. From the trends we saw, I hoped to be presented with wonderfully insane and over-the-top couture. Not so much. There were many shit collections. Thank you to Christian Dior, Chanel, and Jean Paul Gaultier. They are clear winners of Spring 09.

THE WINNERS:

CHANEL: I loved the all white theme, because white is the perfect spring time color. Not to mention white jeans are coming back in style, which started in the underground Europe fashion scene last season and has finally debuted to the runway this season. White gives a sense of freshness, and combined with the lace and crystal detailing in Chanel's collection...wonderful!

CHRISTIAN DIOR: Wasn't the best out of the three, but still better than everyone else in the sense that he had an eclectic mix of time periods thrown together. The tight waist, 50's full skirt, and 17th century picturesque hats. The floral prints were a little bit like tacky tapestry, but it worked. I didn't like the last piece (the dark burnt red dress) simply because it looked like a costume from the set of Girl With The Pearl Earring gone all wrong.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: Best collection. The African-ness of ready-to-wear was transformed into couture magically. Seriously. The feathers, detailing, movement, subtle colors, tailored style...perfection. Everything has a sort of timeless class to it as well, like these designs can be worn 20 years later and still be applauded as innovated couture.

Lily Donaldson..yes I am a little obsessed with her. But hey she makes clothes look good.

THE SO-SO'S:

GIVENCHY: Mostly boring. Lots of suits. Luckily in the collection of bland I found two pieces that I absolutely loved.

LILY DONALDSON! AGAIN!

ELIE SAAB: Can you say "Oscar Red Carpet Kiss Ass"? Because I can. Although his pieces were beautiful, they're so generic. Yet you know every single celebrity in Hollywood is going to wear his collection, which is going to make it successful despite the total lack of imagination put into it.

THE LOSERS:

VALENTINO: Throw up in my mouth.

GEORGIO ARMANI: Throw up in my mouth.

How unflattering is that skirt?! Even Lily could barely pull off this piece (but she is still da bomb).

If you read this entire blog, you have no life...as do I. :)

keep it classy,
